Establishing Eden, Margit Lukács & Persijn Broersen. (Netherlands, New Zealand, 2016, 10 min)

EstablishingEden_BroersenLukacs_0333_Courtesy the artists and Akinci

In ‘Establishing Eden’ Broersen & Lukács focus on the establishment shot: the moment a landscape is identified and becomes one of the main protagonists. In blockbusters like Avatar and The Lord of the Rings films these shots have been used to capture and confiscate New Zealand to construct it as a new Eden. Broersen & Lukács recreate these shots and show this Eden as a series of flat images, creating an apparent reality, an illusion that just as easily falls together as apart.

Fóra do Continente, Nico Martínez Millán. (Spain, 2014, 20 min)

FDC_Still 1

Chefa and Victoria, the only women that share space, climate and isolation on the Ons Islands (Galicia), understand life in a totally opposite way. The bravery and the energy of one of them contrast with the fear to what might come from outside of the other. ‘Fóra do Continente’ is the allegation that the own protagonists do of an almost deserted island. In the era of (tele) communications and societies 2.0, two families live year-round in an isolated island. Away from the big supermarkets, public health and education, Cesario, Victoria, Emilio and Chefa refuse to leave these Galician islands.
